This collection is a fusion of inspiration drawn from Chinese scholars' stones and driftwood found along the Hudson River.
As a child, I developed a deep fascination for collecting stones and wood, a passion that persisted into adulthood. Living along the banks of the Hudson River provided me with abundant opportunities to gather an array of unique wood specimens. In 2023, I began utilizing wood-fired kilns to fire my sculptures, a technique that infuses the pieces with the essence of the natural material.
The process of wood firing imbues each sculpture with an element of unpredictability, as the wood ash melts and leaves its mark on the surface in intricate patterns. It is this unpredictability and the organic collaboration between fire, ash, and stone that I aim to celebrate in my work. By allowing the elements themselves to shape the final outcome, each piece becomes a testament to the inherent beauty and spontaneity of nature.
